OPERATION

HEADSTOCK.

Press button 1 controls main drive and pump motors. lever 2 controls dry plate friction clutch on drive unit, move clockwise for "off" position. Spindle speeds are changed by dial 3, bur clutch 2 must be dis-engaged before any change is made. Two ranges of speeds are shown on dial 3. To change from hight to low range, disengage clutch 2, withdraw lock pin 4 and move lever 5 to the right untill lock pin 4 re-engages. it is not necessary to use force in turning speeds change dial, if gears do not engage, use clutch lightly.

Knob 6 on head stock, reverse the drive from the spindle to the leadscrew, and as it controls a single dog clutch it will always engage the leadscrew at the same relative position, thus eliminating any out of pitch tendancy when reversing, this is important when cutting metric pitches since the half-nuts must remain closed untill completion of the work. A neutral postion is provided and marked "FEED". Knob 6 should always be set in this postion when using belt feeds. This is to isolate the headstock gears, minimise the movement of oil and maintain a low internal temperature. Furthermore it is of importance when using the higher range of spindle speeds necessary in producing fine surface finishes, to the order of 10 micro inches or better.

Spindle locking is provided by depressing knob 7, this is sping loaded, a quarter turn clockwise will hold in lock position.

Spindle register for chucks etc., is of conical form, attachments being secured by three quick release cams of positive action. on removing, all three cams must be turned conter-clockwise, unitll engraved line is at right angles to spindle axis, this postion is also indicated by the feel of a spring loaded plunger.
